Koï returns to print
After 24 issues and years spent exploring Asian cultures in France, the independent media outlet Koï is coming back in print — now as a bilingual French–English edition, travelling across Europe to meet East and Southeast Asian cultures and communities.
Your support will fund printing, European distribution, and help ensure independent, rigorous journalism that reflects today’s Asian voices.

Koï is back with a French–English bilingual issue dedicated to Asian cultures and communities in Europe. Since 2017, our independent media company has been telling the stories that rarely get told elsewhere.
Our ambition with Koï Europe: to portray today’s Europe through the cultures and diasporas from East and Southeast Asia — with investigations, portraits, and field reports from across the continent, from London to Budapest, from Düsseldorf to Kyiv.
In this special issue, you’ll discover powerful stories:
– a Vietnamese soldier fighting in Ukraine,
– Düsseldorf’s Japanese community,
– new Asian associations redefining representation in Europe,
– and the revival of Asian cuisines in the European gastronomic scene.

Who we are
Hello — I’m Julie Hamaïde, founder of Koï.
I’ve dreamt of this special Europe issue for years.
As a journalist from a mixed-heritage family, I launched Koï in 2017 to give Asian cultures and communities the space and visibility they deserve in the French media landscape — one that was sorely lacking in voices, nuance, and representation.
For Koï Europe, I’ve gathered an international team of journalists, photographers, illustrators and translators — many from Asian backgrounds themselves.
Together, we are telling the story of our Europe.

Why support Koï Europe?
You deserve authentic, inspiring stories, told by the people who live them.
Koï Europe stands for independent journalism, created by a team of professionals with diverse origins and perspectives.
A magazine that reflects you — and connects you to the richness of Asian cultures across Europe.
It’s a magazine that connects readers, associations, artists and cultural organisations across the continent.
A space for dialogue and exchange, one that opens conversations and brings people together around shared stories.
The first of its kind — a magazine to keep and share
Koï Europe is the first editorial project dedicated to East and Southeast Asian communities across the European continent, offering an unprecedented overview of their stories and experiences — from Sweden to Hungary, from Ukraine to France.
A beautifully crafted object to keep and share, filled with in-depth content meant to be revisited over time.

What your contribution supports
Your pre-order helps fund the key stages of creating an independent, high-quality magazine:
- High-quality content, crafted by a talented and committed team of journalists, photographers, illustrators, translators, proofreaders, and designers — all passionate professionals who make Koï what it is.
- Original reporting across Europe, to document real stories and voices from Asian communities on the ground.
- A beautifully printed magazine, in a completely redesigned, premium, durable and bilingual format.
- European-wide distribution — to make sure every copy reaches you, wherever you are in Europe.

And because every contribution matters, your support comes with exclusive rewards: a copy of the magazine, your name featured in the issue, exclusive Koï red envelopes, previous editions, or original creations by artists from Asian diasporas.

For other destinations, it’s also possible! If your region isn’t covered automatically, email us at abonnement@koimagazine.fr and we’ll find a solution.
What’s different about this issue?
👉 It’s Koï’s first bilingual issue, with a completely redesigned, premium format inspired by coffee table magazines.
And for the first time, we go beyond France to explore East and Southeast Asian cultures and communities all across Europe.
Why a bilingual edition?
👉 Because Koï Europe is designed for a continental audience.
We wanted this special issue to be accessible to as many readers as possible.

Thank you
A huge thank you to everyone who made this issue possible —
to our journalists, photographers, illustrators, translators, editors and designers.
Thank you to our community, loyal since day one and growing stronger over the past eight years — you are the reason this magazine exists.
Thanks also to our partner media and associations for their support, and to the Médianes studio for accompanying us on this beautiful journey.
Thank you to the artists who are supporting this campaign :
– Christel Han draws under the pseudonym bananako. She takes inspiration from multicultural identities—starting with her own—and uses drawing as a way to build connection between people. She illustrated the graphic novel Made in France in 2019 and also works as a graphic facilitator.
– Melody Ung is a freelance illustrator and comics artist whose work is often inspired by Vietnam—a way for her to reconnect with her roots through soft, colorful imagery. She illustrated the culinary guides La cuisine vietnamienne illustrée by Nathalie Nguyen, Asia Gourmet by Impératrice Wu, as well as the children’s book Est-ce que tu as faim ? by Grace Ly.
– Siyu Cao is the creator of Tiny Eyes. Through her drawings and storytelling, she explores Chinese culture and intercultural experiences. Inspired by language, food, and traditions, her work celebrates the beauty of everyday life and invites readers to build bridges between cultures. In 2019, she published Débridée with Éditions des Équateurs.
– Kei Lam is a French illustrator, comic artist, writer, and film director. Her fresh, vibrant, and colorful world allows her to work across a wide range of media. She creates posters, book covers, packaging, textiles, and advertising illustrations, contributes to many press and children’s publishing projects, and exhibits her drawings in various venues. Discover her work at keilam.fr.
– Eliane Cheung, daughter and granddaughter of cooks, grew up in a family where everything revolved around food. During her intense years pursuing a PhD in linguistics, she found refuge in creating a blog dedicated to cooking and all kinds of gourmet discoveries, giving a central place to drawing. This became the starting point of a new life as a culinary illustrator.
– Christine Phung is a French fashion designer who blends sportswear and couture with elegance. A graduate of École Duperré and the IFM, she founded her label in 2011 after working for houses such as Lemaire and Chloé. Her style combines architectural rigor, fluidity, and poetic graphic design. Winner of the Grand Prix de la Création de Paris and the ANDAM Award, she has led creative direction at Leonard Paris and supported Princesse tam.tam. Today, she continues developing her brand, advises other fashion houses, and teaches her vision of sustainable fashion.
